We are passionate about helping young people get started in business
because they are the future of business!

Resilience, problem-solving, money management and leadership skills are just some of the essential skills and capabilities that can be learned and enhanced through starting a business. The Shift Momentum IGNITE Programme has been built to support by helping young people, aged 16-24 develop valuable life skills by way of starting their own business with the IGNITE Programme.

Shift Momentum have designed IGNITE for young people who may have struggled with formal education, or are not sure about what to do next and are at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training), or are unemployed – to provide an alternative route to get excited about.

From learning the fundamentals of working for yourself through to building a business plan with a go-to-market strategy, our IGNITE Programme will help young people develop the skills to successfully launch a business of their own; or the skills they learn will help them develop into better employees for existing businesses, having a much better understanding of the demands and requirements of running a business.

Shift Momentum are pleased to offer a limited number of free places on IGNITE, funded through the European Social Fund as part of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Region of Learning partnership led by Cambridge City Council with Cambridgeshire County Council.

How does IGNITE work?

IGNITE is a 6-month programme that will be delivered through a day of intensive support once per month at our local training premises, followed by zoom ‘check-in’ sessions with the young people throughout, where Shift Momentum can review progress and ensure that participants are on course to achieve the programme goals.

Our main aim of this programme is to support young people by giving them the tools, direction and network required to launch a business for the first time.  Upon completion of IGNITE, the young entrepreneurs will be introduced into our business owner community of over 1000 members to continue their growth surrounded by a community of entrepreneurs all connecting, learning and growing their businesses.

Who is IGNITE for?

If you are aged between 16-24 and are keen to start a business for yourself but aren’t sure of what that means, where to start, or what you need to do; then the IGNITE Programme will teach you what you need to know and support you through the process.  If you would like to know more about what it takes to be self-employed or want to develop your personal and life skills, IGNITE will fully support you.

Our free places are for young people who are aged 16-24 and at risk of not being in education, training or employment, are currently NEET, unemployed or economically inactive (not in work or receiving benefits).

WHAT THE COURSE LOOKS LIKE

MONTH ONE

The fundamentals of working for yourself

What does it really mean to start your own business? What should the structure be, self-employed, a limited company, a partnership?! During the first month, the cohorts will determine what their business is and create an ‘action plan’ to pull together a realistic draft business proposal.

MONTH TWO

Idea generation and validation.

During month two the participants will carry out market research to build on and  validate  their  initial  business idea using recognised and trusted frameworks. By the end of month 2, participants will have established that their business proposition is viable from a financial, consumer need and competition point of view.

MONTH THREE

Building a business plan.

Refining the work from months 1 and 2 will lay the foundation for a more rounded business plan whilst beginning to understand financial management including sources of finance, profit/loss, income tax/NI, cashflow and budgeting. During month 3 the cohorts will focus on developing an offering that supports their vision and mission of the business.

MONTH FOUR

Go to Market.

Month 4 will focus on how to launch a micro-business through the development of a ‘Go to Market’ plan, understanding how to build marketing assets and how to use a sales accelerator solution to embed the business development efforts required.

MONTH FIVE

Operations – Mapping out and building sales.

In month 5 participants will be shown how to map out key processes that will be required in their business to ensure it is operationally efficient.  During this month the cohorts will set up analytics to measure business performance and work on mindset preparation for when they decide to ‘press go’ on their launch and go direct to market.

MONTH SIX

Expanding your network.

The final part of the programme will focus on how participants can expand their network with purpose, looking up, down and across to identify who is in that crucial support network as they grow beyond the Ignite Programme.
